The Monon Railroad Historical-Technical Society, Inc. was formed in the mid-1970s as a not-for-profit organization exclusively for educational purposes by a group of individuals interested in preserving the memory of the Monon Railroad. The three main purposes of The Monon Society, as it has become known, are to: A) Engage in the collection and preservation of information, vestige, and other items of historical or technical interest concerning the Monon Railroad and its predecessor companies or subsidiaries. B) Engage in research concerning The Monon for educational purposes. C) Maintain an association of persons having an interest in The Monon.
One of the major activities of The Monon Society is to acquire and catalog former Monon Railroad documentation, photographs, and slides. Today, The Society owns an extensive library of these items and makes them available to Society members and others for historical or modeling projects. The Monon Society is also engaged in the acquisition and restoration of former Monon rolling stock. To date, The Society owns and has restored two former Monon cabooses to operational condition. One is housed at the Indiana Transportation Museum at Nobleville and another at French Lick, Indiana at the French Lick Scenic Railway. The Society also owns a restored Business Car, The Lynne, at French Lick. On static displays are, a boxcar, flat car, and wood caboose. Locating and acquiring former Monon stock is an ongoing attempt to prevent the inevitable scrapping of this rare equipment.
The Monon Society is headquartered in Salem, Indiana at the Depot Museum, a replica of the former Monon depot and conducts many joint projects with the Salem Depot Museum and John Hay Historical Center.
The MRHTS also maintains a presence on the World Wide Web at www.monon.org .
