About The Monon Railroad Historical-Technical Society, Inc.

The Monon Railroad Historical-Technical Society, Inc. was formed in the mid-1970s as a not-for-profit organization exclusively for educational purposes by a group of individuals interested in preserving the memory of the Monon Railroad. The three main purposes of The Monon Society, as it has become known, are to: A) Engage in the collection and preservation of information, vestige, and other items of historical or technical interest concerning the Monon Railroad and its predecessor companies or subsidiaries. B) Engage in research concerning The Monon for educational purposes. C) Maintain an association of persons having an interest in The Monon.

/i//mononbox.jpg One of the major activities of The Monon Society is to acquire and catalog former Monon Railroad documentation, photographs, and slides. Today, The Society owns an extensive library of these items and makes them available to Society members and others for historical or modeling projects. The Monon Society is also engaged in the acquisition and restoration of former Monon rolling stock. To date, The Society owns eight former Monon cabooses, a boxcar, and a flat car, which are under restoration work or located in various railroad museums throughout Indiana. Locating and acquiring former Monon stock is an ongoing attempt to prevent the inevitable scrapping of this rare equipment.

The Monon Society is headquartered in Linden, Indiana near the former Monon depot and conducts many joint projects with the Linden-Madison Township Historical Society, Inc. These projects include displaying restored former Monon rolling stock, opening an expanded Monon library and museum, and acquiring adjacent land and buildings for future expansion.

The MRHTS also maintains a presence on the World Wide Web at www.monon.org .
